Did you know that there is an actual pony express here in the United States? I didn’t until a few weeks ago.
Today began the 55th annual riding of the Hashknife Pony Express run from Holbrook, AZ to Scottsdale, AZ, nearly 200 miles.
This is the longest term pony express in the history of the world. The original one, of the old west, only lasted for 18 months. Hashknife, the Search and Rescue Team for Navajo County, actually contracts, with the Postal Service to carry mail on this route once per year. This year they are carrying nearly 8,000 pieces of mail in 30 vintage canvas mailbags that were originally used by the railroad, in its mail service.
Here are posted the photos that I took at the beginning 1/4 of the ride. Tomorrow, we will travel to Scottsdale, AZ to film the mail being delivered on Friday. So, over the next two days I will be adding to this album. http://www.flickr.com/photos/donnybud/sets/72157632651498893/
