Hashknife, Pony Express

Image

Did you know that there is an actual pony express here in the United States? I didn’t until a few weeks ago.

Today began the 55th annual riding of the Hashknife Pony Express run from Holbrook, AZ to Scottsdale, AZ, nearly 200 miles.
This is the longest term pony express in the history of the world. The original one, of the old west, only lasted for 18 months. Hashknife, the Search and Rescue Team for Navajo County, actually contracts, with the Postal Service to carry mail on this route once per year. This year they are carrying nearly 8,000 pieces of mail in 30 vintage canvas mailbags that were originally used by the railroad, in its mail service.

Here are posted the photos that I took at the beginning 1/4 of the ride. Tomorrow, we will travel to Scottsdale, AZ to film the mail being delivered on Friday. So, over the next two days I will be adding to this album.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/donnybud/sets/72157632651498893/

First Love

I was in about the third grade and I had not yet learned to tie my shoelaces when I first met her. Well, maybe I could tie them, I guess. But there were much more important things for a nine year old guy to do on a busy school day, than to keep his shoelaces tied. That was one of those things that you resorted to after stumbling onto your face or loosing a shoe while in hot pursuit of an “enemy” on the playground.

As I’ve suggested, the state of my laces were not a priority in my life. One day after a particularly nasty fall, I was approached by one of the older girls, Darlene, who took compassion on my plight. Kneeling before me, she graciously tied my laces. She cinched those puppies down so tight that it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

Wow! Standing hair! Goose-pimply skin. Sixty-three years later, those feelings still revisit me when I walk that memory lane.

“There now, Donny Bud,” she cooed sweetly, “Now you won’t hurt yourself any more!”

Well now, that was it for me! I was struck dumb! I had to get that feeling again! I raced around the corner of the schoolhouse and untied BOTH my shoes and casually wandered back to where she stood with her friends, just hoping that she would see my plight. It worked! She tied them for me three more times before the day was over.

Before the day was over, I was IN LOVE. That evening I filled the steamy bathroom window with hearts and DS + DR. I really was in love, wasn’t I?

I was invited to her home for an after-school party later in the year. She held a cupcake for me to taste. The group played Spin-the-Bottle to see who would get kissed by the birthday girl… but I couldn’t seem to win.

My darling Darlene! Darlene Roderick! But that love was not meant to be. It suffocated from separation and lack of attention. In our three-room country school She was too many grades ahead of me for me to ever be in the same room with her, or sit beside her.

Oh, I’m sure that I loved my mother before Darlene, but mothers just don’t produce that same kind of tingle. There were many, more practical loves that were to follow, but not many that I remember as well.

Doubts That Assail

When I was a young man I had more doubts than anyone should carry.

I cherished my doubts. I nursed them, babied them, fostered them, as one would a sickly pet or plant.

Here are a few examples. Marriage was an early goal of mine. But, I doubted that I’d find a suitable wife. I found several good prospects (the first one was when I was in the third grade, but that’s a story unto itself).

As a Senior at CAA, I discovered a young lady who agreed to marry me, but when I graduated, leaving her behind to finish high school, our friendship couldn’t survive the separation. A four hour lecture by the Girls Dean filled me with more doubts.

When the most likely one at WWC agreed to marry me, I doubted that she had made the right choice and I almost backed out. I doubted that I could be a good husband… father… teacher… plasterer… carpenter… electrician… painter… plumber… heavy equipment operator… grandfather… photographer… writer.

My doubts led to a lot of depression throughout the years. Eventually, I began to doubt that God even existed. I doubted that God, if He existed, would care a wit for me. After 18 years of wondering in a wilderness of doubt, God brought me upright with the death of my father.

I thank God daily that He delivered me from the days of depressive doubts. I’ve learned to shrug off those things that I can’t do well, and give God the glory and credit for those things that I CAN do well.

I just wish that I would have learned to do that 50 years earlier … but then, how did I know then, that I’d even live 50 years, or take so long to learn anything as important as trusting God! All He wanted to do was to carry my “load” in life, and I kept trying to snatch it back from Him.

I became a man of fierce independence. “I’ll do it my way.” “I can do it.” “My way or the highway.” All very familiar slogans. The road to becoming a “self- made man” was a roller coaster ride with my family on-board, whether they liked roller coaster rides or not.

When I compare the last twelve years of my life to the previous sixty years, I shudder at the possible differences in my life if I had only learned sooner to Let God.

Let God. I recommend it highly.

Jeremiah 29:11-12

11 For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. 12 Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.

How much better would my life have been if I had spent more time discovering those plans that he had for my life? If I had spent less time trying to my life for me?

The upside would have been less time being depressed, and wallowing in doubt.

Who Are the Shooters?

Why is it that those who steal guns, who then go and kill movie goers and

children in school have never been evil conservatives or NRA members?

Ft Hood shooter – Registered Democrat – Muslim

Columbine shooters— Too young to vote; both families were registered

        Democrats and progressive liberals

Virginia Tech shooter — Wrote hate mail to President Bush and to his staff

       – Registered Democrat

Colorado Theater  shooter – Registered Democrat; staff worker on the

Obama campaign; Occupy Wall Street participant; progressive liberal

Connecticut School Shooter – Registered Democrat; hated Christians

Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ shooter – – leftist, registered Democrat

Common thread is that all of these shooters were progressive-types.so why is

that, when the media always tells us that conservative, NRA-type gun-owners

are the real danger???

VEGAN FAITH? – SAYS WHO?

I am reading this morning from my YouVersion Bible, and happened upon Gen. 1:29-30. I read it again. Since I have over a hundred versions and translations to choose from in this application, I tried several of them and IT read basically the same thing.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is fruit of a tree, yielding seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 and to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for food: and it was so.” (KJV)

Now, from my youth I have heard it touted the we should return to the diet of Eden, for better health, for longer life, and etc. Although our family did not practice a vegetarian lifestyle, we did were not heavy meat eaters, either. It wasn’t until I married a practicing vegetarian during my early twenties, that I became persuaded of the lifestyle. It wasn’t until I was in my mid-fifties that I heard of a Vegan. If I thought a vegetarian lifestyle weird, I REALLY thought a vegan lifestyle was out of touch with reality.

Since vegetarian diet was supposed to be like it was in Eden, it made good sense to get back to the original plan. That was a major point in the church that I attended, it was the whole idea of living.

But it seems that I have been taking too literally, the teachings of the church, without checking out the Biblical reasoning behind those teachings.

Although the texts quoted above was His original plan, Adam and Eve threw a monkey wrench in those plans, by not following the script He gave them. Everything changed. Big time. Especially after He destroyed the earth by a flood. The Bible says that after Noah and his party survived, God said in

Gen. 9:2-4, “… 2The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds of the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. 3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you green plants, I now give you everything. 4 But you must not eat meat that still has its lifeblood still in it.” (NIV)

Now, it seems that the ORIGINAL diet of Eden DID NOT include salads… only fruits, herbs, and nuts. It wasn’t until after the Flood that meat (without blood in it), and salad was added to the diet of mankind. By God Himself.

Did He added meat and salad to shorten our lifespan, or was it added to counter the effects of the changes on earth that were the results of the flood?

Perhaps what we eat should be judged in the context of Romans 14:1-3

1 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them {both}.”

Was it really because my faith was weak, that I became a vegetarian or you a vegan?

I’m not to criticize a meat eater for believing he can eat anything. Because God died for his sins just as He died for mine. Whether either of us see the Kingdom of God or not, does NOT depend on how we eat, but whether we have faith! It is obvious from verse 3, that He accepts the strong in faith as well as the weak of faith.

So, you can enjoy your Kosher burger and I’ll eat my salad until I have the strength of your faith. We can both give thanks to God for His provisions and meeting our needs.

History Lesson on Your Social Security Card

Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn’t know this.
It’s easy to check out, if you don’t believe it.  Be sure and show it to your family and friends. They need a little history lesson on what’s what and it doesn’t matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts.

Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the message, NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION, was removed.

An old Social Security card with the “NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION” message.

Our Social Security
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
completely voluntary,
No longer Voluntary

2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program,
Now 7.65% on the first $90,000
3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year,
No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the independent ‘Trust Fund’ rather than into the
general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and,
Under Johnson the money was moved to
The General Fund and Spent

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.
Under Clinton & Gore Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month — and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to ‘put away’ — you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
controlled House and Senate.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— —
Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the ‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the  US
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— –
AND MY FAVORITE:
Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That’s right!

Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.  Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!
If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve.
But it’s worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?

Pick up your guns OR Lay them down?

Pick Up Your Gun or Lay It Down

It’s hard not to get embroiled in affairs of government these days with all the skullduggery going on in Washington. I have friends who would argue that our basic Constitutional rights are being eroded so quickly. “We are fast becoming slaves!” they implore. “We need to buy our guns now, and stockpile ammo, so that we can defend ourselves against our corrupt government.”

Some have even pointed out that at one time Jesus told his disciples, “If you don’t have a sword, sell your coat and buy one.”

Some make some pretty compelling points.

Where does one draw the line in the sand and declare, “My rights are here, I will not back down.”

For some of us, it is a difficult question to answer. We want to follow our forefathers and all those that have died to give us the freedoms that our fathers enjoyed.

Even within my lifetime I can tell that I don’t have the same amount of freedoms that my father enjoyed.

But what were those freedoms anyway? Were they not the blessings of God? When reading accounts of the struggles of our founding fathers to get this great country on its feet and headed in a new direction, one cannot help but be impressed with the hours and hours of prayer that accompanied each decision. Many of them thanked Devine Providence for the direction given and the prayers answered.

But, there has always been an element of evil involved, also. The devil himself worked vigorously behind the scenes to thwart their plans. In every political party there has been the element of evil minds working for disharmony among the group. Selfish and self-serving men have be elected.

As a modern Christian, I believe that our country has about used up its allotted time. The time for defending our “freedoms,” or getting into politics to help keep our country going in the right direction has long-passed. Our ancestors have done what they could to keep an equilibrium, but the evil ones of the world are holding the upper hand now, even as they did in the days that Christ first walked this earth.

It’s time we stopped worrying about our loss of “freedoms,” our guns and food supplies, and start warning people of the limited time that we have left on this earth before Christ comes in judgement and condemnation.

His second coming will catch so many by surprise. Everyone, no matter their station in life, whether it be politician, slave, president or king, will be carrying on as though the world will never end. As Jesus told his followers, “As the lightning comes out of the East and shines to the West, so shall the coming of the Son of man be.” We may see the signs and expect a storm, but will have no idea what it’s really all about until it’s too late.

So, do I have a Constitutional right to arm myself? Absolutely!

Does the Constitution give me the right to defend myself against my government? Absolutely!

If the president himself comes knocking on my door to collect my guns, do I have the right to shoot him? Absolutely!

Will I do it? Most probably not. I believe it is too late in this world’s history to quibble over things. God is looking for people who will “love their enemies as themselves.” We are past the Old Testament times when He used His followers to meet out judgement on the surrounding nations. Today, when the nations around us have filled their cup of iniquity, He will put an end to the madness that reigns now.

I don’t know that I have it in me to “love” my enemies yet, but I will not do them any harm either. God will take whatever revenge is needed. I trust His judgement. I leave it in His capable hands.

There is the very real possibility that I will become a slave, even at my advanced age, or worse a prisoner in war between good and evil. Even if I am killed because of my Christian beliefs, all is not lost, for Jesus died the permanent death in my place.
